Why Eight Sleep

The Pod is hardware, firmware, mobile software and machine learning in one product, and the engineering work covers all of it. Teams handle thermal and mechanical design for new products in San Francisco, embedded Linux and kernel work on the Pod's system software, foundation-model and personalization research, and native iOS and Android apps. The company is backed by Y Combinator, Founders Fund, Valor and Khosla Ventures. Fast Company named it one of its Most Innovative Companies in 2018, 2022 and 2023, and TIME named the Pod one of its Best Inventions of the Year two years in a row.

The careers page is upfront about the pace: "This isn't a traditional 9-to-5." It pitches the company to people who "thrive in a high-pressure environment where your impact matters." In posts on the company blog, employees describe DMs from leadership that keep the hierarchy flat, and replies that come "almost immediately" when you message or call someone. One example of that speed: the team rebuilt the iOS and Android apps in three months.
