Human Interest
Human Interest builds affordable, full-service 401(k) plans for small and medium-sized businesses, and it charges no transaction fees to employers or their employees. Founded in 2015 and based in San Francisco, the company is on a mission to ensure that people in all lines of work have access to retirement benefits.
Human Interest's Remote Policy
Most corporate and technical roles at Human Interest are remote within the United States: engineering, data, product and finance roles are typically posted that way. Working from the San Francisco headquarters is a choice, not a requirement; the Human Interest careers page refers to "SF-based employees who opt to work an in-person or hybrid schedule."
Customer success is the main exception. From the same page: "Located in the Silicon Slopes area of Utah, our Lindon office is the center of our customer success operations." Lindon customer success and sales development postings set the schedule as "In our office, 4 days per week, Monday-Thursday. Flexibility to work remotely on Friday." Field sales roles are also tied to place: each is based in a named city and spends about three days a week in the field.

Why Human Interest
Human Interest runs 401(k) and 403(b) plans end to end, including for employers setting up a retirement plan for the first time. Its own staff save through the same product: the careers page calls the employee plan "A great 401(k) plan: our own!" Backers include BlackRock, TPG (The Rise Fund), SoftBank, Marshall Wace and Baillie Gifford.
The company runs on five operating principles: customer obsession, long-term orientation, autonomous and accountable teams, an escalating bar for talent and performance, and fundamental optimism. Its about page spells out what two of them mean: it hires people and trusts them "to own customer outcomes ... without dictating how the work gets done," and it commits to "act quickly when we make hiring mistakes." Building with AI is part of the job across functions. Engineering, data and product postings ask people to work with tools such as Claude Code and Codex, and product managers are expected to prototype their own ideas.
