Why Motion
Motion tells candidates what it is before they apply. Its published operating doc states: "Motion is an extreme company. If you want to put in an average effort to achieve an average outcome, Motion is not for you," and pairs that with a hiring rule: "We have a policy not to hire people who don't work hard, no matter how brilliant they are." Its culture doc names nine values behind that, among them Strong work ethic is a significant competitive advantage, Disagree and commit, and Straightforward communication, the last carrying a blunt corollary: "We don't tolerate passive-aggressiveness or company politics." The careers page compresses the same idea into a value it calls Raw hours make a difference. Frugality is written down too: Motion says it generally does not keep fixed stipends for anything, reasoning that a stipend nudges people to spend the whole allowance whether they need it or not, while committing to "We pay people well, so act like it." Note too how it words its own working model: the careers page says "100% Remote Friendly," not remote-first or fully distributed.
Day to day the work is synchronous and feedback-heavy. There is no async-first language on any Motion surface, and the operating doc devotes whole sections to why working more hours matters, pain tolerance, and embracing feedback. Engineers quoted on the careers page describe senior colleagues who are not afraid to ask questions or admit a mistake, which is the openness Motion credits for its speed.
One more thing worth knowing before you research the company: Motion's parent entity, Nexusbird, has launched a wholly owned sibling company called Wonderly that sells an AI platform to service businesses. Wonderly is a separate company with its own product, domain and job board, not a renamed Motion. usemotion.com continues to sell and market the AI calendar suite.
