Fully Remote

Automattic is the company behind WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack, and Pocket Casts, building the publishing and commerce tools of the open web. It has been fully distributed since 2005, long before remote was mainstream.

Automattic's Remote Policy

Automattic has been remote-first since its founding in 2005 and describes itself as a fully distributed company: "Everyone works from the location they choose." Everyone also works during the hours they choose, with async communication treated as the default. Its NoHo NYC and Mission SF spaces are described as "optional spaces, not offices." Read more on How We Work and in the Automattic Creed: "I will communicate as much as possible, because it's the oxygen of a distributed company."

Why Automattic

Automattic's founding product, WordPress, powers roughly 42% of all websites, and WooCommerce runs over a quarter of online storefronts. The company builds for the open web and open source, committing 5% of its resources to WordPress development through its Five for the Future pledge, and it ships fast: one-button deploys push code to production 60 to 80 times a day.

Day to day, work runs asynchronously. About 70% of projects happen on internal P2-themed WordPress.com blogs, roughly 25% in private chat, and the rest in Slack, guided by written expectations like "Communicate, often and publicly. It is impossible to over-communicate at a8c." There are no set hours, minimal hierarchy, and a crowd-sourced internal handbook every Automattician can edit. Two rituals stand out: every full-time hire spends their first two weeks doing WordPress.com customer support and one support week annually regardless of role, and teams meet in person at 5 to 7 day meetups, with 3 to 4 weeks of travel expected per year.
