Descript makes a video and podcast editor that lets you edit media by editing its text transcript. If you can edit a document, you can cut a video. Its AI co-editor, Underlord, can assemble a video from a plain-language description of what you want. Descript was founded in 2017 and is headquartered in San Francisco.

From Descript's careers page: "Our employees have the option to work on-site, in a hybrid model, or remotely anywhere in the USA or Canada. It's the 21st century, after all."

The same page adds: "We're hiring people to work in our San Francisco office and people who work remotely. If you're remote, we'll ask you to fly in a few times a year."

Ten of Descript's 11 current job postings list their location as "San Francisco, CA or Remote, US" (the other is San Francisco only), and none lists a Canadian location, so check the location on each posting before you apply.

Why Descript

Descript's editor treats a recording as text instead of a waveform: delete a sentence from the transcript and it disappears from the audio and video. Descript says it has raised a total of $100M, primarily from the OpenAI Startup Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, Redpoint Ventures and Spark Capital.

Descript doesn't expect local people in the office every day, but it does "value the serendipitous moments that come from working together in person." That shows up as annual destination off-sites: "No matter where you decide to work, you'll get to know your team at our annual off-site gatherings." The careers page also sets expectations with a line few companies would write: "Sorry, no ping-pong tables."
