Kong builds API and AI connectivity software, including Kong Gateway, the Konnect platform and an AI Gateway, that lets organizations secure, manage and govern traffic between their APIs, AI models and agents. Founded as Mashape in 2009 by Augusto Marietti and Marco Palladino and spun out as Kong Inc. in 2017, Kong calls itself "The AI Connectivity Company."

Kong Inc.'s Remote Policy

In May 2025 Kong wrote: "Kongers have the flexibility of choosing the work environment that works for them, whether that be a remote or hybrid approach." (Kong, May 2025) In a September 2026 post, Kong wrote: "Many roles and teams start their first day or week together in an office. Our sales team runs in-person onboarding boot camps." (Kong, September 2026)

In general, Kong's roles in North America are remote, while roles based near one of its office hubs are hybrid, as is often the case in its hiring outside North America. Each posting states the arrangement for its role, and where a hybrid posting gives the office days, it asks for 2 to 3 a week. One London posting reads "Hybrid from our central London office ... 2–3 days a week in the office," and a Bangalore posting reads "hybrid, with 3 days in the office and 2 days working from home."

Why Kong Inc.

Kong began in Milan, Italy, where, as its careers page tells it, Aghi and Marco "became friends and dreamed up an idea for a business." The company is now headquartered in San Francisco. It opened an R&D hub in Bengaluru in 2024 and an engineering hub in Milan in 2026. The engineering work sits close to the network layer. Kong's AI Gateway postings look for Golang or Rust and count hands-on NGINX, OpenResty, LuaJIT, Envoy or Istio experience as a plus. In 2026, its staff solutions engineer postings required hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot or OpenAI Codex.

Kong's values read like working instructions: "We are drivers, not passengers," "We value ideas over hierarchy," and "We prioritize speed, iteration, and results." In 2022 Kong wrote that it ran its standups asynchronously across time zones and made all of them optional. The company is also deliberate about how new people join. On day one, every new hire, remote or not, joins a live orientation with that week's other new joiners.
