Remote-First

Skylight is a digital consultancy that uses design and technology to help government agencies deliver better public services. Founded in 2017 by 18F and U.S. Digital Service alumni and joined early by former Presidential Innovation Fellows, its distributed, remote-first team modernizes the systems behind programs serving veterans, families, and patients.

Skylight's Remote Policy

Skylight's careers page describes the company as "a distributed and remote-friendly team, currently spread out across 34 different states," and promises "maximum flexibility to decide when, where, and how to get your work done." One caveat from the company's about page: "Sometimes the nature of our client work calls for closer proximity to their location."

Why Skylight

Skylight describes itself as more than a company: "a movement to reinvent how the government serves families, patients, veterans, immigrants, and many others in today's digital world." That mission is concrete. Teams ship digital services for clients like the U.S. Air Force, the Administration for Children and Families, and the state of Connecticut, bringing the product and design practices its founders honed inside federal digital service teams to agencies that need them most.

What stands out is how much of the company's people infrastructure is public. Its Career Pathways framework, adapted from the GOV.UK Digital, Data and Technology capability framework, defines career levels for 16 roles and drives hiring, performance reviews, and salary determination in the open. Its published code of conduct sets a clear standard, "impact matters more than intent," and its Intentional Communications policy includes an "ouch signal" anyone can use to stop a conversation that causes harm. The values page sums up the approach: "We apply design thinking to the employee experience to make worklife simple, flexible, enjoyable, and productive."
