Research Associate (Remote)
Ballotpedia is seeking to hire a full-time, 100% remote Research Associate to drive the growth, execution, and client success of the organization’s research initiatives through business development, relationship management, and high-quality project delivery.
Reporting to the Director of Content, the Research Associate is a key member of Ballotpedia’s Content department, responsible for generating and sustaining revenue through proactive prospecting, business development, and strong client relationship management. This role identifies and cultivates new research opportunities, advances prospects through the sales pipeline, scopes projects in collaboration with clients, and converts opportunities into high-quality, paid engagements.
Once projects are secured, the Research Associate leads their execution from kickoff to delivery—managing timelines, coordinating cross-functional contributors, supervising contractors as needed, and ensuring deliverables satisfy the details of the contract or proposal and meet the needs of the client.
The role balances client-facing paid research projects, including white-label deliverables, with internal research initiatives that support Ballotpedia’s content and communications teams. The Research Associate ensures research projects deliver measurable value for clients while advancing Ballotpedia’s mission through revenue generation and/or research or analysis that supports the work of other Ballotpedia teams.
The Research Associate will work remotely from their home location. All Ballotpedia staff work remotely. To join Ballotpedia, you must have a computer with Internet access.
Ballotpedia offers a flexible work environment, BP Flex, in which every employee enjoys unlimited vacation and flexible scheduling. Each employee will be oriented to the principles of Ballotpedia’s flexible environment during new employee training.
The starting pay range for the Research Associate is $62,000-$82,000/year, commensurate with experience. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for performance-based commission tied to research sales and client development outcomes.
In addition to salary, Ballotpedia offers an annual benefits stipend equivalent to $8,000 that is paid out in equal increments in each paycheck once an employee becomes benefits eligible. The stipend may be used to pay for a full benefits package, including health, vision, and dental insurance; retirement accounts; and more. If benefits are not elected, the stipend is taxed as regular income and added to salary.

Ballotpedia describes its staff as nationally distributed, working from home offices across the United States. All of its current openings are listed as remote roles in the United States.
Staff receive an $8,000 annual benefit stipend, paid in equal amounts with each paycheck. Any unused portion is taxed and added to salary. Staff and their dependents get medical (an HDHP or PPO plan), dental, vision, supplementary, and life/AD&D insurance after a brief waiting period. The 401(k) offers Roth and Traditional options from the first paycheck, and an HSA, a healthcare FSA, and a dependent care FSA are also available. New staff get a second monitor once they finish their review period.
Vacation is unlimited and paid. Under the BP Flex policy, staff are encouraged to take at least two weeks a year, including one vacation of five consecutive workdays. The company also observes a long list of paid holidays, including Juneteenth, Black Friday, and the stretch from Christmas Eve through New Year's Day, and it closes company-wide on BP Unplugged Days. Staff get 10 days (up to 80 hours) of paid personal and sick leave a year from day one. Benefits-eligible employees get up to 4 weeks of paid parental leave.
Ballotpedia calls its compensation philosophy transparent. It says pay is adaptable and closely tied to performance and proven expertise, so that it stays consistent and fair across a nationally distributed staff. An annual staff assessment and a system of performance levels support this. Some job postings list a starting pay range: the Director of Operations role, for example, lists $120,000 to $135,000.
Yes. Ballotpedia hosts paid internships throughout the year, and they are 100% remote. Interns work 10 to 20 hours a week and earn at least $15.00 an hour, or the state minimum wage if that is higher.
