Borrowing is one of Monzo’s most important growth engines. We’ve built strong scale in the UK, and the next phase is even more ambitious: grow in the UK, expand into new customer segments, and build the underwriting capability needed to scale into Europe.
We’re looking for a senior ML leader to help shape that next phase.
You’ll lead a high-calibre team of ML scientists and help define Borrowing’s ML roadmap across UK growth, new customer segments, and EU expansion. You’ll work across underwriting, pricing, limits, and lifecycle decisioning — improving today’s models while helping build the next generation of capability for Monzo.
This role combines near-term commercial impact with long-term strategic advantage:
You’ll partner closely with leaders across Credit Strategy, Product, Engineering, Model Validation, Data, and Platform, and influence decisions that shape both business performance and the long-term architecture of credit decisioning at Monzo.

No. Monzo's senior backend engineering posting says there is no mandated requirement on office attendance, even for engineers who live nearby, though the company values meeting in person. If you live outside London and are asked to come in, Monzo supports you with the costs. The offices are most social on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Remote roles at Monzo are UK-only. Most UK postings are listed as "Cardiff, London or Remote (UK)", and its engineering posting says engineers live everywhere in the UK, from Brighton to the Western Isles. Roles in Barcelona, Madrid and Dublin are office-located, and visa sponsorship is available for certain roles.
Monzo says it trusts people to work enough hours to do the job well, at times that suit them and their team. Customer operations roles are the exception and work set shifts. Engineering keeps meetings within core hours, and Monzo says it will make part-time working happen whenever it can.
Monzo offers 26 days' holiday plus bank holidays, or 34 days if you opt out of bank holidays. Everyone can also take 1 month of unpaid leave every year, and there are 8 weeks of paid sabbatical leave after every 5 years of service. Compassionate leave is 10 days as standard, with grief counselling.
Primary caregivers get 26 weeks at full pay, then 13 weeks at statutory maternity pay and 13 weeks unpaid, after 13 weeks of service. Secondary caregivers get 13 weeks at full pay plus 39 weeks unpaid. Monzo also offers up to 12 weeks of paid neonatal leave, up to 8 days of paid fertility treatment leave a year, up to 10 days of additional paid leave for pregnancy loss, and fertility and family-forming health education.
Salaries are reviewed every year, and an Incentive Award tied to performance can be paid as cash, equity or a mix. Monzo contributes 4% of base salary to your pension and matches additional contributions up to a maximum of 6%. Each employee gets a learning budget of 1,000 pounds a year for books, training courses and conferences, and at least one engineering posting publishes its salary range alongside the role's level. Monzo is also an accredited Living Wage employer.
