Ahrefs
Ahrefs builds a marketing data platform for SEO and AI-era discovery, covering backlink analysis, keyword research, rank tracking, and brand visibility. Unlike most tools in the category, it runs its own internet-scale crawler and index rather than renting data, and even built an independent search engine, Yep. Founded in 2010, bootstrapped, and profitable with no funding rounds.
Ahrefs's Remote Policy
Ahrefs publishes no company-wide remote policy on ahrefs.com/jobs or ahrefs.com/careers. The strongest statement in their own words appears inside a single job description: "We're bootstrapped, profitable, multinational, and fully remote. Our culture is fast-moving, low-ego, and built on smart decisions and ownership." (Events Marketing Executive job description). Scope matters: that is one role's copy, not a stated company policy, and other roles on the same board are anchored to Singapore, Palo Alto, Cambridge MA, or Acton MA, including one with a daily in-person requirement. Treat remote availability as role-by-role and confirm it for the specific job you are applying to. Source: https://ahrefs.com/jobs

Why Ahrefs
The infrastructure is the company. Ahrefs runs a crawler across the web 24/7 and stores the results in a custom petabyte-scale distributed key-value store holding roughly 25 petabytes of live data: trillions of backlinks, trillions of HTML snapshots, and billions of pages in the content index. The backend is written mostly in OCaml with some C++, the frontend in ReasonML. That is a deliberate bet, not an accident of history. The engineering team describes itself as worshipping functional languages and static typing, leaning hard on code generation and meta-programming, and following DRY and KISS. The motto printed across the careers surface is "first do it, then do it right, then do it better." They rely heavily on open source and publish their own work at github.com/ahrefs.
The org chart is unusual too. There is no conventional product manager role: product designers own PM, design, and leadership for their area. Teams are lean, hierarchy is flat, and the company describes itself as low-ego and offbeat. Hiring reflects the same preference for substance over ceremony. The interview loop is application, recruiter screen, take-home task, then an unstructured technical discussion with no LeetCode, coding puzzles, or whiteboard exercises. Some roles pay you for the work assignment stage. Because Ahrefs is bootstrapped and profitable, there is no investor clock setting the roadmap.
