Axios
Axios is a news company covering politics, business, tech, and media trends through newsletters, a mobile app, a news stream, and podcasts. Its house writing formula, Smart Brevity, exists to make news consumption easy, efficient, and worthy of a reader's time, and Axios treats belief in it as a hiring criterion.
Axios's Remote Policy
Axios publishes no dedicated remote work policy page, so its own job board is the closest thing to a stated position. The pay paragraph carried on the majority of open postings reads: "Because this is a remote-optional job posting, this salary range takes into account all possible locations within the United States, but candidates will only be eligible for the salary range for their location." Editorial listings say it more directly. An Axios Local editor role asks for "confidence working in a remote-first environment," and a part-time Axios Local reporter role is listed as "Remote, U.S.-based." Why Axios
Beyond the flagship newsletters, Axios has pushed hard into local news: Axios Local hires reporters and writers near the markets they cover to feed a growing network of city newsletters, and local expansion is one of two things publisher Nicholas Johnston named in March 2026 when he described the goal as building "a newsroom of the future, tightly focused on subject matter experts and local expansion." Subscription verticals under Axios Pro and a live events operation, Axios Live, round out the business. Axios has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Cox Enterprises since the 2022 acquisition, with co-founder Jim VandeHei still in the CEO seat.
That strategy is visible on the hiring surface. Every open role carries the same paragraph: "Axios is committed to embracing artificial intelligence as a core part of how we work. All team members are expected to actively develop AI literacy and use AI tools to enhance their productivity, creativity, and efficiency." The company keeps its own framing narrow, saying it is "starting to see how AI can help us automate some tasks to focus humans on our most consequential work" and that it will "focus our energy where human journalists win." The tempo is real-time: postings ask candidates to remain available for rapid-response editorial requests, and event-facing roles ask for willingness to work non-standard hours, including early mornings and evenings. Employees are called Axions, employee resource groups include Axions of Color, Quaxios for LGBTQIA+ staff, and Women+, and the company runs its own survey to capture demographics and assess inclusion and belonging. One piece of context worth carrying into an interview: Axios has made three rounds of job cuts since August 2024, most recently 11 newsroom roles in March 2026, though it also reported beating its 2025 revenue targets.
