Director – Software Engineering
The Director - Software Engineering is a leader responsible for shaping the technical and delivery direction of 3Cloud’s Software Engineering practice while ensuring delivery excellence, team development, and organizational maturity. This hybrid role blends strategic technical influence, practice leadership, and manager-of-managers people leadership, with selective executive engagement when deeper engineering and architecture credibility is needed.
The Director ensures that teams are healthy, delivery is strong, individuals are growing, and the practice builds reusable assets, consistent standards, and modern cloud-native capabilities on Azure. You lead your organization in achieving client and financial success by ensuring consistent delivery of high-value billable work, driving utilization and margin health, and holding leaders accountable for delivery quality and financial integrity.
Responsibilities
Solution Architecture & Technical Leadership
- Contribute to the shaping and support of the technical vision for Software Engineering across the practice, in partnership with Principal Architects and other senior technical leaders.
- Establish and evolve reference architectures, engineering standards, and evaluation frameworks for modern application development on Azure (e.g., API-first, microservices, event-driven, cloud-native patterns).
- Provide high-level architectural oversight on key engagements, ensuring technical decisions align with practice direction, security and compliance expectations, and long-term maintainability.
- Identify gaps in engineering and architecture capability (e.g., performance, reliability, observability, DevOps, AI-assisted development) and lead the creation of training, reusable assets, and accelerators to close them.
- Champion the thoughtful adoption of modern engineering approaches, tools, and patterns (including AI-assisted development) that improve quality, speed, and reliability while remaining responsible and secure.
Delivery & Consulting Excellence
- Provide oversight for key client engagements to ensure quality, alignment to business objectives, and clear connection between our work and client outcomes.
- Support delivery teams through escalation guidance, architectural coaching, and strategic clarity when projects or relationships become complex or high-risk.
- Partner with Engagement Managers, Architects, and client stakeholders to ensure predictable, high-quality outcomes on large programs and critical workstreams.
- Participate in select executive-level conversations to validate technical direction, shape roadmaps, and resolve risks where Director-level presence improves alignment and confidence.
- Help clients mature their engineering and delivery practices (e.g., standards, governance, DevOps, Agile ways of working) so improvements persist beyond a single project.
- Set expectations and guardrails for delivery quality, engineering practices, and ways of working across the Software Engineering practice.
- Monitor engagement performance, risk, and client satisfaction across your portfolio; intervene proactively when trends or signals suggest delivery or relationship risk.
- Ensure consistency and quality across teams without personally owning program-level roadmaps, instead empowering and coaching managers, tech leads, and architects.
- Partner with Engagement Managers and Practice Operations to manage utilization, margin, and staffing mix in a way that supports both financial goals and sustainable team health.
- Promote operational readiness and supportability across engagements, including appropriate use of CI/CD, testing strategies, observability, and incident response practices.
Mentorship & Team Development
- Develop and grow managers, Principal Architects, and senior engineers through regular coaching, clear expectations, and constructive feedback.
- Build connected, inclusive, high-performing teams with a culture of trust, collaboration, and accountability, modeling the behaviors you expect from leaders.
- Monitor team health, morale, and workload balance across multiple teams, addressing engagement or performance concerns proactively in partnership with People Team and Practice leadership.
- Oversee staffing and resource alignment for your area, balancing utilization targets with growth opportunities, development goals, and succession planning.
- Define interview standards and mentorship strategies for Software Engineering, training others to apply them consistently and improving hiring outcomes and talent growth at scale.
Growth & Innovation
- Drive development of practice-wide training, reusable assets, tools, templates, and accelerators that improve delivery quality, speed, and consistency across Software Engineering engagements.
- Collaborate with Directors, Principal Architects, and Practice Leaders across App Innovation, Data & AI, and Advisory to ensure our solutions and offerings are cohesive and aligned to 3Cloud’s broader strategy.
- Guide internal knowledge-sharing communities, brown bags, and upskilling efforts so engineers and architects can quickly adopt new patterns, tools, and approaches.
- Enable the GTM team by collaboratively leading the creation of Software Engineering offerings, estimation playbooks, and proposal templates that match market needs and improve proposal quality, win rate, and margin confidence.
- Support the GTM team as Subject Matter Expert and/or pursuit lead for Software Engineering solution pursuits, including complex modernization and greenfield application initiatives.
- Contribute to practice evolution by identifying capability gaps, talent needs, and strategic opportunities (e.g., new solution areas, partnerships, or accelerators).
- Influence multi-million-dollar annual sales and delivery outcomes for a portfolio of Software Engineering work, ensuring both client value and healthy business performance.
Requirements
- 14+ years of experience in application development and/or software engineering, with significant hands-on experience delivering modern cloud-native solutions.
- 5+ years of experience in application architecture and leading development teams.
- Expertise with a major cloud platform (Azure strongly preferred; AWS or GCP acceptable), including designing, deploying, and operating production workloads.
- Deep experience leading hybrid and distributed teams effectively, maintaining alignment, quality, and predictable delivery across time zones.
- Experience working in a consulting or professional services environment.
- Demonstrated success leading large, complex client engagements or programs, including responsibility for delivery quality, client satisfaction, and financial performance.
- Strong background in modern software engineering and architecture practices on Azure (or a major cloud platform), including familiarity with PaaS, serverless, integration patterns, and DevOps practices.
- Proven ability to act as a trusted advisor to senior client stakeholders (e.g., CTO, VP Engineering, Product leaders), influencing priorities and guiding strategic technical decisions.
- Experience shaping and implementing practice-wide standards, assets, or offerings that improve repeatability, quality, and time-to-value.
- Demonstrated strength in people leadership, including coaching managers and senior technical leaders, building healthy teams, and addressing performance and engagement issues constructively.
- Strong business acumen with experience partnering on utilization, margin, staffing, and sales pursuits.
- Excellent communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to explain complex technical and delivery topics clearly to executive and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to lead system-level architecture, make high-impact technical decisions, and balance competing concerns (value, cost, risk, speed) in partnership with business and product stakeholders.
- Experience leading or influencing multi-team programs, including dependency management, integration planning, and architecture governance.
- Desire for continuous learning and adoption of new technologies in the cloud space.
