The idea started in a pub in 2006, when Publitas' CEO, tired of hauling piles of trade magazines around for his consultancy job at Deloitte, decided to publish them online instead. Trade magazines turned out not to be the market; retailers and brands were, and the 2012 pivot is what made the business work. Publitas has grown from a three-person operation to its current size fully bootstrapped, with no venture funding behind it, and that independence shows in the shape of the company. It now runs five brands rather than one product: Publitas itself, WePublish and Folders.nl in the Dutch leaflet market, PromoButler.be in Belgium, and Spott, which turns images and video into interactive, shoppable assets.
Day to day, the team works about 80% asynchronously in Notion and Slack, with Fridays kept free of meetings. How the company operates is written down in public: a cultural manifesto at values.publitas.com, plus eight named operating principles including "Candor with Care", "Impact with Intention", and "Embracing the Uncomfortable". Career growth runs through standing 25-minute 1-1 sessions with a team lead, held bi-weekly, weekly where the team can manage it, and monthly at minimum, with notes tracked in a performance Asana task rather than left to memory. Once a year the whole company meets in person at a retreat whose location is kept a surprise until it happens.
