dbt Labs started as an open-source project in 2016 (then Fishtown Analytics) and grew into the analytics engineering category it defines. Open source is not a marketing layer here, it is a value: the company defaults to open source and contributes to what its leadership calls the knowledge loop by thinking in public.

The team is distributed and runs on shared values and Slack. Two values shape day-to-day work more than any ritual. "We work hard and go home" is a stated commitment to individual boundaries, with the company explicitly supporting the boundaries that others set. "Transparency always wins" pushes employees toward uncomfortable honesty over short-term comfort. Leadership principles add a bias for action: leaders set pace and only slow decisions when facing a one-way door.
